Someone made a Greg Ostertag tribute

March 11, 2010

If you search “Dwyane Wade” on YouTube, you’ll probably find a handful of tribute videos to different music, chronicling his amazing, yet young career. The same goes for Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan and Gary Payton.

One player you probably don’t expect to see a mix tribute of is former NBA center Greg Ostertag. Fortunately, thanks to the internet and amazing NBA fans, Ostertag mixtapes exist.

Ostertag made headlines for a brief second last year with talks of a comeback to the league, it obviously didn’t pan out, but you gotta give the big fella props. He might have looked like a dude you’d see working at a tractor store, but he had a solid NBA career and started for some very good Utah Jazz teams that made it to the NBA Finals in the 90’s.

Props, TheKingMisiek

Kobe hits another game-winner

March 10, 2010

If anyone wanted to challenge Kobe Bryant for the title “Most Clutch” player in the league, they’re way behind this season. Nobody has been as deadly as Kobe this season. It seems like he’s been hitting a game-winning shot about once every two weeks.

He continued the trend last night against the Toronto Raptors, hitting this absurd 18-foot fadeaway baseline jumper over practically two Raptors defenders with 1.9 seconds left on the clock. It’s been automatic for Bryant this season. Last night’s last-second gunner was his sixth of the season.

Kevin Durant is the MVP of the NBA this season, but there isn’t a better hooper in the league than “Black Mamba.”

Announcing this would have been fun

March 3, 2010

I know this is from a couple of days ago, but if you haven’t seen it, I want to make sure you get the chance. During a Lakers/76ers game last week, Kobe Bryant had an unusual foul on Andre Iguodala.

The announcers kept it clean, and so will I, but he did more than just “shoved the shooter in the air.”

That should merit six free-throws.

Awkward.

Kevin Durant has my vote for MVP

March 2, 2010

Take a minute and look at the NBA standings.

I’ll wait.

Now, I also want you to look at the league leaders in scoring. Again, I’ll wait.

Done?

It’s not too big of a shock to see that Kevin Durant is among the league leaders in the scoring department, but what about numero uño? You probably didn’t expect that. Currently he trails only LeBron James, but by less than a hair. The scoring title will more than likely go down to the wire (see 1994) and if Durant keeps stride, he can probably take the crown.

More importantly, the Oklahoma City Thunder are the sixth-seed in the Western Conference. No, you’re not reading that wrong. Last week the team came off a nine-game winning streak and through it all, Durant has been the leader.

Drake is my dude, but he has nothing on this Sprite commercial

Goodnight world, All-Star Weekend was fun. Check back tomorrow for more on the weekend, the Mavs trade and whatever else I feel like bringing you all.

The 2010 All-Star Game preview

February 14, 2010

Thanks to injuries, everyone that deserves to be in the game is there. Of course, in the East, my only exceptions would be Josh Smith and Stephen Jackson. Out West, you have both Aaron Brooks and Carlos Boozer. Other than that, it finally all worked out.

Iverson stepped away from the game and his “personal matters,” actually seem legit. Granted I’ve given him hell the past year on this blog, I wish him and his family nothing but the best. He’s obviously going through a lot emotionally. That said, it worked out for David Lee, who never should have been left off the roster in the first place.

Thanks to Kobe taking a seat back, unfortunately, Dirk is going to find his way in the starting lineup — where he should have been. It also got Jason Kidd in the game, which was a little outlandish, that’s a reputation and a respect vote by Commissioner Stern. That spot should have went to Brooks or Boozer, no doubt. Kidd’s numbers are down, granted he’s still solid — he’s not an All-Star. If you’re going to put a veteran there for being a veteran, then just give Shaq a spot on the Western Conference Team, because he should always be there.

In addition, Chris Kaman found his way out to Dallas, thanks to Brandon Roy’s injury.

It really has worked out perfect for so many players, and I’m glad that a bunch of the guys that deserved recognition, got it — even if it took a couple of injuries.

Game starts at 8pm.

PREDICTION: West, 147-139. Kevin Durant is gonna take the MVP.

Can I have my Saturday night back?

February 14, 2010

There is no way to get around it, All-Star Saturday was bad. I’m sure the after-party scene in Dallas was awesome, but unfortunately, TNT doesn’t cover that. Instead, we were forced to watch one of the worst dunk contests in years (maybe the worst) and an hour long event of Omri Casspi, Kevin Durant and Rajon Rondo playing H.O.R.S.E. in the most anti-climatic fashion.

It stunk, but it was only one year.

The last couple All-Star Saturdays have been excellent. Thanks to Nate Robinson and Dwight Howard, they made the dunk contest an exciting and an incredible show, they helped bring the event back. It’s the main event, it always will be, no matter how bad it gets or how little of talent is in the event. Last year’s contest was great, and the previous few were also top notch.

The dunk contest needs charisma, personality and swagger. Obviously it relies on great dunks and acrobatics, but the flare is what makes the entire dunk. That’s why Howard’s Superman antics, and Robinson’s ‘Kryptonate’ swag and height disadvantage made for such a show.

Kobe Bryant makes Rudy Gay pay

February 2, 2010

I don’t know what Rudy Gay was thinking, but he was obviously fairly excited or not thinking at all here. Of course, when you make a mistake against the Lakers, Kobe Bryant or one of his talented teammates will make you pay for it.

This was just three of the 44 points that Bryant scored yesterday, as he became the Lakers’ all-time leading scorer, passing Jerry West (who coincidently wore the number 44) — tribute? Maybe. Kobe did pass on the final play of the game instead of taking the shot.

Luckily for Gay, the Grizzlies still pulled out the surprising victory.

All-Star starters announced, the fans suck

January 22, 2010

It’s good to know that NBA fans halfway figured things out during the final weeks of NBA All-Star fan voting — they voted in Steve Nash instead of Tracy McGrady, who had the second most votes for Western Conference guards through the first few ballot returns. Unfortunately, they didn’t get the Allen Iverson memo, or maybe Nash was just more persuasive than the guards in the East.

Iverson is averaging career-lows with 14.4 points and 4.4 assists per game. He’s only played 19 games this season, bickered his way out of Memphis after three games and hasn’t helped the Sixers improve (6-10 with Iverson in the lineup).

Iverson should be glad that fans have showed their continued love for him, but if he had any class, he’d give his spot on the team up to a deserving player.

Joining Iverson as starters in the East are LeBron JamesKevin GarnettDwight Howard and Dwayne Wade. Nash will be joined by teammate Amare StoudemireKobe BryantCarmelo Anthony and Tim Duncan, who made a final push to beat out Dirk Nowitzki.

Seven spots remain in each conference and there are plenty of deserving players, so who gets picked?

More on that later, but here’s hoping Iverson accepts the fans’ gesture and does the right thing amongst his peers.
